Canadian Activist Marianne Cerilli Speaks in Twin Cities

Twin Cities DSA and DSA International Commission organized a successful speaker event with Canadian politician and activist Marianne Cerilli in the days leading up to the Republican National Convention in St. Paul. Marianne Cerilli is from Winnipeg and was the youngest woman elected to the Manitoba Legislature, 1990-2003. During that time while in government she was elected caucus chair by her colleagues and appointed Ministerial Assistant in Family Services and Housing. In opposition over two terms she was critic for Environment, Housing, and Immigration. Since leaving the Legislature Marianne has been teaching in Manitoba colleges and founded a community development business 'Change Agent: Community Development for Health, Sustainability and Peace.' Currently she is an advocate and mentor in Winnipeg's West Central Women's Resource Center. She also chairs the local Social Planning Council Poverty Committee. In 2006 she ran second in the election for Mayor of Winnipeg. Marianne Cerilli is a member of DSA International Commission which she was invited to join in 2003.

During her two day visit to the Twin Cities she first addressed 120 students and community members at a local community college - an interview by the area's community cable station aired the next day. In the evening she led an informal international talking circle of over 20 DSAers and friends in downtown Minneapolis. An article in the Winnipeg Free Press referenced both events: "... Cerilli will also speak to a gathering organized by the Democratic Socialists of America, the country's largest socialist organization and a sister organization to Canada's NDP."

Marianne Cerilli's talk focused on recent political changes in Canada and U.S.-Canada relations - the Bush legacy. Free trade style integration of the two countries' economies, the militarization of Canada by the U.S.-Canadian Prosperity and Security partnership, and assaults on Canada's universal health care system and social welfare state. The conversation concluded with the prospect of developing international Upper Midwest cooperation on the topic of renegotiating NAFTA - in favor of a more equitable and sustainable future. Following the Cerilli event Twin Cities DSA joined the large anti-war protest march at the opening day of the RNC - carrying our red banner through the streets of St. Paul, Minnesota.
